We are committed to promoting Access to Energy.

The 2018/2019 edition has a budget of € 450,000. The projects submitted funding applications from € 25,000 to € 100,000.

The Fund will assume project costs: up to 75% of the total for nonprofit entities; and up to 50% of the total for for-profit entities.

Co-operative Bank Foundation

Marsabit, Isolo and Kwale counties

Agriculture remains an important economic activity in Kenya, with great potential for alleviating poverty. But it needs to be transformed by science and technology to ensure the production of high-quality, competitive products.

The Co-operative Bank Foundation partners with 7 Schools in arid and semi-arid areas of Kenya to introduce 12 solar powered greenhouses as part of the Agribusiness Club for students. The greenhouses will provide students with an opportunity to learn and apply new techniques in agriculture and help them to develop entrepreneurship and business management skills.

The crops will include vegetables and fruits, which will be used to enhance the nutrition and food supply level of the school diet. The surplus will be sold in the local markets and the funds can be used in any innovative projects proposed by the students, following an “earn as you learn” model.

Status july 2020:

  • All 7 schools have functional greenhouses powered by solar power and fitted with well-functioning irrigation systems.
  • In Isiolo County, 5 greenhouses and 3 solar irrigation systems were set up in 3 selected schools. A variety of crops including spinach, tomatoes, potatoes, cabbages and beetroot were planted. The plants are being used to enhance the nutrition of the school diet and this has resulted in the schools making savings which they are re-investing into the greenhouse project.
  • In Kwale county, 5 greenhouses and the solar irrigation systems were installed in all the 3 targeted schools. The schools harvested tomatoes, capsicum and spinach.
  • In Marsabit, 2 greenhouses and solar irrigation system were set up in the selected school. The students planted tomatoes and spinach in the 2 greenhouses.
  • The entrepreneurship and business management training has taken place in all schools.

Marrere, Nampula district

In Mozambique, one of the poorest countries in the world, 58% of the population is under 19. Although 94% of girls go through primary school, only 24% continue with secondary school, 10% complete secondary and only 1% of girls go to university.  Almost half of the girls (48%) get married and have their first child (40%) before the age of 18 and Mozambican girls have 70% probability of becoming single parents and household providers before 35. This is the cycle of planned poverty.

Girl MOVE is investing in the multiplying effect of girls' education and in leadership training, and the "Energy for a brighter future" project aims to exponentiate the social impact of Girl MOVE Academy's programs, by making its Campus a reference in terms of sustainability, with a solar pv system plus batteries meant to serve the whole infrastructure.

The project will also include building a "Turn on the Talent" room, equipped with 20 laptops, and able to operate day and night, so as to serve the female talent's training needs, within the communities.

Namacurra Distric, Province of Zambezia

Mozambique’s risk profile places the country among the most exposed to climate change effects and natural hazards in Africa. The combination of the extreme natural hazards with high overall vulnerability and isolation of human settlements in rural communities increases the impacts of disasters, that are causing loss of many human lives yearly. 

Zambezia was heavily hit during the January-March rainfalls in 2015. Due to floods, thousands of families were relocated in areas without access to public infrastructure and services. An UN-Habitat’s recent project (2015 to 2018), funded by UNICEF, provided technical support for resilient school reconstruction as requested by the Government of Mozambique. 

The objective of the recent ‘Empowered schools in Namacurra District Project’ is to select 2 schools out of the 7 already built in Namacurra to provide them a renewable energy source, in this case, solar panels.

The access to renewable energy source will turn the school buildings into a higher quality learning infrastructure for students and teachers. Furthermore, the school buildings will also become an electricity service provider for the community around the school, also enabling the implementation of Early Warning Systems. Developed by the National Institute of Disaster Management (INGC, initials in portuguese), these systems are based on the usage of mobile phones as alert tools for communities.

The success of this initiative and the lessons learned with this pilot project will enable a project scale up to other post-disaster reconstructed schools in Mozambique.

  • Selection of 2 schools to receive the solar pv systems
  • Community public consultation conducted 
  • School facility adaptation with installation of doors and windows to ensure the security of solar panels and electric system
  • Installation and Commissioning of the PV System
  • Training on risk management, early-warning systems and solar system maintenance conducted
  • Inauguration took place after being postponed due to COVID-19 preventive measures
  • Execution rate: 100%

Fundación Energía Sin Fronteras

Chezi, Dowa district

Saint Mary’s Rehabilitation Centre, in Chezi, Malawi, provides housing and 24 hours medical assistance to 130 AIDS orphans and their caretakers, as well as ambulatory medical and educational assistance to a large number of other children and vulnerable elderly from the surrounding population.

The Centre suffers from a very deficient electrical supply from the national grid. Power cut-offs ranging from 4 hours to several days, are usually solved by a diesel generator, but its operational costs are unaffordable.

The project will install five independent photovoltaic power supply systems in five buildings of the complex and an additional solar system for water pumping.

Kakuma Refugee Camp

Kakuma Refugee Camp, in Turkana West, hosts more than 186,000 refugees from about 14 countries. The current population is mainly from South Sudan (50%), Somalia (26%), and Great Lakes African countries. The majority of refugees are young people, most of who aspiring for higher prospects of life. With all these prospects, electricity has always been a major challenge. Kakuma has no reliable energy systems focused on help small businesses grow. 

Okapi Green Energy aims to enhance productive livelihoods and general living standards by providing quality, affordable, and reliable electricity and internet connectivity to refugees and host communities in Kakuma. The primary target groups are businesses, community-run centers, and households in the Kakuma refugee camp.

The Okapi Energy+ is a mini-grid that will supply pay-as-go electricity to customers according to their consumption need. The mini-grid will spread within a 1 km radius from the generation site connecting 70 low residential customers, 50 mid residential customers, 30 high residential customers and 50 commercial institutions.

Disclaimer: The implementation rate is calculated based on the specific objectives activities for each project. Most of those objectives are set from the acquisition and implementation phase of the energy systems.
