RES Integration and Flexibility

The Clean energy for all Europeans package sets an ambitious binding target of 32% for renewable energy sources in the EU's energy mix by 2030. According to these targets, the share of renewable energy in the power sector would increase from 25% in 2017to 85% by 2050, mostly through growth in solar and wind power generation. This is where different Flexibility options come into play: electrochemical storage, Power-to-X solutions, demand-side management, Virtual Power Plant and many other options that will allow the Energy Power System to cope with variable Renewable Energy Sources intermittency. These technologies are the core of EDP NEW's activities on the projects EU-SysFlex, XFLEX, FLEXnCONFU, IANOS, LOLABAT and CURRENT DIRECT.

__________

Battery Energy Storage

Synopsis:
This episode of the R&D Sessions aims to address energy storage, in conjunction with generation, transmission and distribution, since it presents specific characteristics to be considered in the planning and operation of energy systems. In particular, battery energy storage technologies have made it possible to decentralize energy storage and are now suitable for residential, commercial, network-scale and off-grid applications. We intend to answer questions such as: what are the barriers to be overcome and the opportunities for the development of these technologies? What services are to be provided? And who are the stakeholders to be involved?

Speakers:

  • Eduardo Rodrigues, researcher EDP NEW
  • Alexandre Neto, researcher EDP NEW
  • Mário Simões, EDP Inovação
  • Ismael Miranda, EFACEC
  • Johan Soderbom, InnoEnergy

__________

A Blockchain Energy Business

Synopsis:

Blockchain technology has the potential to transform the energy sector by promising transparent, tamper-proof and secure systems that can provide shared and reliable resources and enable new business solutions, especially when combined with smart contracts. 5G - A Grid For All Services?

Synopsis:

With the need to connect devices that support services with needs for reliability, speed and scalability, telecommunications services need to evolve, which has led to the creation of 5G. There is a possibility that in a few years our homes will have smart sensors that will automatically detect construction errors, mold, water leaks, and electrical problems, launching alerts automatically. And how will these sensors communicate? Using 5G grids! In this R&D Session we discuss whether 5G grids will be able to meet the identified needs and we also present the 5GaaS project, a European collaborative R&D project funded under the H2020 program, whose scope is a pilot for implementing a decentralized marketplace, connecting the entire 5G value chain between stakeholders, using blockchain technology.
