João Bandeira and Miguel Raposo are about to face the most challenging marathon of their lives

EDP sponsors João Bandeira and Miguel Raposo in the 2015 Antarctic Ice Marathon. The two athletes are pioneers in this great challenge, since they are the first Portuguese athletes to set foot on the Arctic for this unique race.

The marathon follows a strict environmental policy provided by ANI - Adventure Network International, which ensures the logistics of the event.

The camp is powered by solar energy and the tents are passively heated up by sunlight around the clock. Soil contamination is also a concern, so protection mats are used when supplying vehicles and aircrafts. All waste produced by the logistics of this marathon is removed from Antarctica, so as not to pollute the glacier.

The 2015 Antarctic Ice Marathon is aligned with the EDP Group's sustainability strategy. With a two decade-presence in Portuguese and Iberian marathons, the Group's strategy favors 'environmentally friendly' sports. The Group has sponsored major surfing events and sailing lessons for young people, in addition to a strong investment in the Portugal Cycling Tour.

Encouraging citizens to be involved in sports as a healthy lifestyle is one of the Group's strategic mainstays.
