EDP challenges tech community to study its own data and create solutions

Tuesday 25, September 2018

EDP wants to be closer to its customers and partners. For this reason, the company will launch today a new website with the Group's operational data, at the Hack The Wind event, with a special challenge for hackers.

EDP will provide operational data from its various businesses on an online platform, which will be open and available to the community. The project is called EDP Open Data and includes technical data from some of EDP Renováveis' wind and solar farms. Anyone can access and analyze clean energy production levels, the availability of turbines and panels, weather conditions, and other technical data pertaining to the EDP group.

The platform is being presented at Hack the Wind, an event held on the sidelines of the world's largest wind power conference, called Wind Europe, which starts today in Hamburg, Germany, bringing together the industry's major players. EDP has partnered with KIC InnoEnergy to challenge the tech community for a hackathon: finding solutions to operational problems affecting wind turbines. The teams that find the best solutions will receive a money prize of up to €7,000.

The Open Data platform will remain online after Hack The Wind and is expected to host data from other business units within the Group, which operates in 16 countries and is engaged in all segments across the electricity value chain.

With the creation of this platform, the company is meeting multiple requests from the technology community to share its operational data. Such data can be used in academic contexts or in the development of energy-related startup projects, among others. For EDP, this is a way of getting closer to the scientific community, which is interested in this kind of information, while identifying individuals and companies with the potential to create new AI-based tools and solutions.

"We at EDP believe that knowledge sharing is the best way to continue to innovate. With EDP Open Data we want to maintain EDP's close collaboration with the community, championing the creation of knowledge and solutions for the Group's business units," says EDP Inovação Director António Vidigal.
