EDP helps home support teams in 72 municipalities

Thursday 09, April 2020

The Care at Home operation involves a financial support of 72 thousand euros to be distributed in the municipalities where EDP has production centers. This initiative aims at reinforcing the aid to the most vulnerable elderly population.

Within the scope of the "Care at Home" operation, a project aimed at the entities providing assistance to the elderly in vulnerable situations but who still live in their homes, EDP, through EDP Produção, will distribute financial support to the institutions providing home support services in 72 municipalities,

The initiative aims to reinforce help with the cost of meals, fuel, personal protective equipment, such as masks or disinfectants, and other routines or needs that its teams have in the current context of the pandemic. These services are currently facing more difficulties due to the restrictions imposed by the state of emergency, which, among other measures, caused the day centers to be closed and converted into home support services that now need additional help.

The Care at Home initiative includes the availability of 72 thousand euros and is being articulated with the municipalities, whose mission is to select the entities that help the elderly that will receive the support. This financial assistance will cover the municipalities where EDP has energy production centers and complements the various contributions that the company has made in these regions for the benefit of the communities.

“We know that, in this pandemic, one of the main risk groups is the elderly who (in many cases) benefit from the assistance of social action services,” said Rui Teixeira, president of EDP Produção. "With this contribution, we intend to support these people through the institutions that are already working with them and which currently need additional help to be able to meet all their needs."

With this social action, EDP expands the set of initiatives implemented to reinforce aid in the fight against Covid-19. Last week, the EDP Foundation, in partnership with Correio da Manhã, launched another project to support elderly homes, by acquiring personal protection materials worth 500 thousand euros.

Among its actions, we highlight the acquisition of a supply list worth 4 million euros, in partnership with China Three Gorges (CTG), which includes 50 ventilators, 200 medical monitors and other equipment that is being delivered to Portuguese hospitals this week. Simultaneously, a batch of medical supplies worth half a million euros was also purchased, involving 500,000 masks and 10,000 personal protective suits.

With these contributions, in addition to other initiatives for customers, suppliers, and partners, the EDP group reinforces its support to those who are at the forefront of fighting the pandemic and to those who assist the most vulnerable citizens on the ground.
