EDP brings energy transition to more families with new solar energy solution for apartments
It is estimated that nearly half of the Portuguese population lives in apartments, which typically lack the roof space needed for traditional solar energy production. To address this, EDP is introducing solar panels that can be installed on balcony railings. This innovative solution will enable these families to participate in the energy transition and enjoy the benefits of solar energy.
EDP Comercial has entered into the solar energy segment for apartments to address a crucial aspect of the country's energy transition process: household energy consumption. Apartment owners with balconies that have railings and good sun exposure can now produce and consume their own energy, potentially reducing their grid energy consumption by up to 25%
According to official Eurostat data, approximately half of Portuguese families live in apartments, which lack the roof space needed to install traditional solar panels and benefit from solar energy. EDP Comercial now offers a solution with lighter panels that can be installed on balcony railings and connected to a simple electrical socket.

With just three and a half kilos per panel (rather than the 20 kilos of a traditional panel), the EDP Solar Apartamentos offer is capable of producing enough energy to save up to 25% on energy consumption from the grid. The system can be monitored in real time by families using the EDP Solar App, giving them greater control and knowledge of the energy, they consume in their homes.
In addition to reducing their dependence on the electricity grid and fluctuating electricity prices, these families can contribute to the country's energy transition by avoiding more than 100kg of CO2 emissions per year.
Solar energy solutions for apartments represent a new and promising market in Portugal, with significant potential for the country's energy transition. The solution now available from EDP could capture a substantial portion of this market, as it is estimated that over half of the balconies in Portugal are equipped with railings.
Households play a fundamental role in decarbonizing the country. As more sustainable solutions become available, an increasing number of families will be able to participate in the energy transition and benefit from it. By producing and consuming renewable energy, replacing gas with clean electricity, opting for efficient equipment, and embracing electric mobility, families can contribute significantly to a greener future.
Decentralized energy production is one of the main avenues of growth for EDP in the coming years, encompassing installations in homes, businesses, and the creation of energy communities. EDP currently serves customers and manages projects in both households and companies across 15 markets, with a total of 2.9 GWp contracted. In Portugal, more than 140,000 families have already chosen to save on their energy bills by using EDP solar panels
