We recognize the value of environment

The management of environmental impacts is ensured by a Corporate Environmental Management System (SIGAC) framed in the Environment Policy. This system, certified under ISO 14001:2015, applies to the “corporate management of policies, undertaken commitments and environmental performance of the EDP Group in the world”.

SIGAC aligns the environmental management systems implemented and certified in the several activities of the Group, and covers all design, construction, exploitation and decommissioning stages, all of which are managed according to their specific features.

Environmental Management Systems

Aware of the critical importance of its activities as development factors and instruments for improving the quality of life of the populations it serves, EDP implements another social responsibility practice by proudly contributing to the preservation of the Environment and Natural Resources, as well as to the Sustainable Development of Societies.

EDP has implemented since 2008 a Corporate Environmental Management System under the NP EN ISO 14001:2015 standard, certified by Lloyd’s Register Quality Assurance (certificate no. LIS6003307), applied to the “Corporate management of policies, commitments and environmental performance of the EDP group in the world”.

This certification frames and strengthens the Group’s public pledges to build environmental aspects into planning and decision-making processes, at all levels, in the value chain, in particular regarding the assessment of the negative impacts that may arise from such activities and their annulment or minimization.

It also promotes the continuous improvement, the alignment and the goal of maintaining and extending the environmental certification of the Group’s facilities and activities, under the ISO 14001:2015 Standard and the European Eco-Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS).

By the end of 2018, EDP obtained the ISO 14001 certification of 96% of the assets with potential environment impacts, including all the activities of the value chain - generation, distribution and supply. The goal of achieving, in 2020, 100% of the activities with environment impact certified is maintained.

In 2018, as a result of the comprehensiveness of its activities’ certifications, 97% of the installed capacity of the EDP Group was covered by certifications according to ISO 14001.

In 2018, EDP obtained the ISO 14001 certification of 86% of the substations' installation power.
