EDP inaugurates its largest utility-scale solar farm in Romania
EDP, through EDP Renewables, a global leader in the development of renewable energy, inaugurated the Albina photovoltaic plant — a significant step for the company. This new asset further contributes to EDP’s efforts to support the development of a cleaner, more secure and affordable energy system in the country.
Located in western Romania, about 9 km from the city of Timisoara, the Albina project has been in operation since late 2024. Albina has an installed capacity of 60 MWp (48.8 MWac) and is expected to generate around 67 GWh of solar energy annually — enough to meet the electricity needs of nearly 40,000 Romanian households. Its generation will also help avoid more than 33,000 tons of CO₂ emissions each year, playing a direct role in decarbonizing the national energy mix.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by institutional representatives, including the Ministry of Energy, Mr. Sebastian-Ioan Burduja, the Vicepresident of Timis County Council, Mr. Alin Popoviciu, EDP Romania Country Manager, Andrei Rapeanu, and other representatives from the company and the wider energy sector.
With this new plant, EDP reinforces its commitment to Romania, a country where it already operates several wind and solar projects, with a total installed capacity of over 570 MW. The company is one of the leading renewable energy producers in the Romanian market.
This investment is aligned with Romania’s updated climate targets under the European Union’s Fit for 55 package. The country has committed to cutting greenhouse gas emissions by 57% by 2030 compared to 1990 levels, and to reaching a 45% share of renewables in gross final energy consumption. Projects like Albina will play a key role in helping Romania achieve these goals in a steady and sustained manner.
EDP continues to strengthen its presence across Europe, focusing on markets with strong renewable potential and delivering energy solutions aligned with the EU’s climate priorities.
