EDP Renewables Celebrates Completion of Azalea Springs Solar in Texas
Lufkin, Texas (October 10, 2025) — EDP Renewables North America (EDPR NA) today celebrated the completion of the 180-megawatt (MW) Azalea Springs Solar project in Angelina County, Texas. EDPR NA executives were joined by industry leaders, local officials, and community partners at a ceremonial ribbon-cutting event on October 10. Azalea Springs Solar will produce enough electricity to power the equivalent of more than 27,800 average Texas homes each year while bolstering the county’s energy resilience, supporting grid reliability, and driving long-term local investment.
With Azalea Springs Solar now online, EDPR NA operates six utility-scale energy projects across the state, representing more than 1.6 gigawatts (GW) of capacity.
“Azalea Springs Solar demonstrates the powerful role energy infrastructure can play in building stronger, more resilient communities,” said Sandhya Ganapathy, CEO of EDP Renewables North America. “This project stands as an example of clean energy in action—strengthening Texas’ grid with reliable, domestic power while driving economic growth across Angelina County and the entire region. We’re proud that Azalea Springs Solar will generate long-term revenue for essential public services, bolster the local economy, and deliver lasting benefits for the state.”
Azalea Springs Solar represents more than $75 million in local and statewide economic impact, including:
- $35 million in revenue to local governments, supporting schools, roads, and essential community services
- Approximately $40 million in regional spending, directly boosting the local economy
- Approximately 250 jobs supported during construction
EDPR NA has reinforced its commitment to community partnership through its support of the Central Independent School District (ISD), including $30,000 to fund a new scoreboard and cheer mats, $10,000 to fund the repainting of Central ISD’s iconic water tower, and backpack donations to ensure local students had the supplies they needed to start the 2024–2025 school year with confidence. By partnering with Central ISD, EDPR NA continues to deliver on its mission to create lasting value and meaningful impact for local families and communities.
Central ISD Superintendent Justin Risner said, “The partnership with EDP, the Azalea Springs Solar project, and Central ISD has been fantastic for our district. The willingness to serve our students and meet their needs has gone way above any expectation we had. Their team has reached out to us several times and provided resources to make our students and the district better. The impact EDP Renewables has on Central ISD will be long-lasting, not only for our district but on our committee as a whole. Central ISD greatly appreciates the support and generosity of EDP and looks forward to a lasting partnership."
American Clean Power Association (ACP) Chief Policy Officer JC Sandberg said, "Texas is proof that a more diverse grid is not only manageable but more reliable and affordable. EDPR NA is helping the state lead the way. Building on EDPR NA's existing 1.6 GW portfolio in Texas, Azalea Springs Solar represents a quick-to-deploy and affordable resource for Angelina County that also drives economic opportunity and sustains local community services. EDPR NA's investment in the state will help insulate residents from rising electricity bills and provide homes and businesses with reliability and security."
Qcells EPC CEO Chris Hodrick said, “This project is an example of how American manufactured energy is delivering affordable, reliable, and secure power to Texas. This is energy you can trust because, from start to finish, you know exactly where this power came from and where it is going. We work every day to deliver certainty; to our partners, their customers, the electrical grid, and, above all else, the American customers who demand and deserve it.”
Nextracker Founder and CEO Dan Shugar said, “Texas has long been an energy industry leader—and with projects like Azalea Springs, it’s building on that leadership to demonstrate the way forward. We’re grateful to EDPR and PCL for delivering this exemplary power infrastructure using locally sourced steel from our Texas factories and employing the NX Horizon-XTR™ system that avoids grading by following the land’s natural contours. This type of project is exactly what our country needs to address the rapidly growing demand for electricity.”
PCL Solar Vice President and General Manager Andrew Moles said, “Azalea Springs Solar Park demonstrates how expertise, innovation and community partnership drive real progress. We are proud to partner with EDPR, creating local jobs, supporting sustainable growth and delivering reliable clean energy for Angelina County. This project is about making a meaningful impact for our clients and the communities we serve.”
