This marks the company’s first renewable generation project worldwide to receive certification and ranks as the second-largest carbon credit initiative in Brazil

On Tuesday, September 9, Monte Verde Wind Farm, operated by EDP, a company operating in all segments of the electric sector, was officially certified for carbon credit issuance. This is the second-largest renewable energy-based carbon credit project in Brazil, registered with the Global Carbon Council (GCC), and the first EDP project worldwide to receive such certification.

Located in the municipalities of Pedro Avelino and Lajes, in the state of Rio Grande do Norte, the wind farm has an installed capacity of 319 megawatts (MW) and generates an average of 1.8 million MWh of renewable energy annually. This output has the potential to prevent the emission of approximately 533,243 tons of CO₂ into the atmosphere each year.

Monte Verde Wind Farm also earned the Diamond Seal — the highest classification within the certification framework — by demonstrating its contribution to seven Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): Zero Hunger, Quality Education, Gender Equality, Clean Water and Sanitation, Affordable and Clean Energy, Decent Work and Economic Growth, and Climate Action. These contributions are the result of social investment initiatives carried out in the surrounding region.

This certification represents a milestone in EDP’s strategic journey and underscores the company’s commitment to leading the global energy transition. In Brazil, EDP already operates a 100% renewable energy portfolio and is focused on delivering solutions that support the decarbonization of small, medium, and large enterprises. The company also invests in fair energy transition projects, which aim to extend the benefits of renewable energy to communities in its areas of operation—promoting social inclusion and improved quality of life through awareness, training, and access to safe, renewable energy.
