EDP and Axpo sign a pioneer contract to optimize battery energy storage system in Poland
EDP, through EDP Renewables, a global leader in the development of renewable energy, has signed a long-term agreement with Axpo in Poland, an international leader in energy trading and renewable power marketing, to optimize a 60 MW battery energy storage system (BESS) project in Poland.
Located in the Greater Poland Voivodeship region, the BESS project is expected to enter operation by 2027, with a storage capacity of 60 MW, which translates into the ability of storing up to 241 MWh of electricity annually from the grid. Axpo in Poland, which specializes in the management and optimization of renewable energy assets across Europe, will operate one of the two battery projects recently awarded to EDP in Poland’s latest capacity market auction last December.
This agreement, one of the first deals of this kind in Poland, marks a significant step in EDP’s strategy to diversify its operations in the Polish energy market and advance storage solutions. The project reinforces the company’s long-standing presence in the country, where it has developed over 1 GW of utility-scale wind and solar energy, along with distributed solar generation solutions for businesses.
By the end of 2024, the BESS project had already secured a capacity payment contract through the country’s primary capacity market auction which will be cumulative to this deal, leading to a high contracted Net Present Value in line with EDP’s investment policy.
EDP entered the Polish market in 2007 through EDP Renewables and expanded further in 2020 with the launch of EDP Energia Polska. The company currently has an installed capacity of over 600 MW of clean energy capacity and has contracted nearly 270 MWp in distributed solar projects for businesses across the country. Recently, EDP, through EDP Energia Polska, which provides tailor-made photovoltaic solutions for corporate customers, launched a new offering that integrates behind-the-meter battery energy storage systems (BESS) into its decentralized solar projects. This flexible solution is tailored to meet the needs of clients across a wide range of sectors and underscores EDP’s commitment to innovation at every scale of the energy transition.
