
EDP in Brazil
EDP has been operating in Brazil for over 20 years and is now worth more than R$ 9 billion, three times more than in 2005 when it went public on B3. It is one of the largest private companies in the electricity sector operating across the entire value chain (Generation, Transmission, Distribution, Commercialisation and Energy Solutions), with a presence in 12 states: Amapá, Ceará, Espírito Santo, Maranhão, Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, Minas Gerais, Pará, Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina, São Paulo and Tocantins. In the Energy Marketing and Solutions business, it operates throughout the country.
In the Generation segment, the portfolio includes 15 hydroelectric generation units and one thermoelectric unit. EDP's installed capacity in Brazil, of 2.83 gigawatts (GW), is mainly composed of clean energy sources (76%).
In Distribution, EDP has full control of the distributors in São Paulo, which supply energy to 1.8 million customers in 28 municipalities in Alto Tietê, Vale do Paraíba and Litoral Norte, and EDP Espírito Santo, which supplies energy to 1.5 million customers in 70 of the state's 78 cities. The Company's Commercialisation operation consolidated its position last year as the 4th largest private Brazilian commercialiser in terms of energy volume sold, reaching the milestone of 17,804 thousand GWh..
In 2016, the company incorporated the Transmission segment into its portfolio and, since then, has acquired five lots of lines and substations in the last two ANEEL auctions. The acquired projects will be installed in Espírito Santo, Maranhão, Minas Gerais, Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina and São Paulo. The ES project, the first to be implemented, is currently in the licensing process.
The Energy Solutions area focuses on developing products for sustainable practices in corporate customer operations, such as implementing energy efficiency programmes and services that add value to businesses. Through distributed photovoltaic generation, nine project sales contracts were signed last year, totalling 10,740 kilowatt-peak (kWp) of installed capacity.
Currently, the company has approximately 3,000 employees, 234 joint venture employees, 220 interns and apprentices, and more than 12,000 outsourced employees.
In Brazil, the company is a reference in areas such as Governance and Sustainability, having been listed on the ISE (B3 Corporate Sustainability Index) for 12 consecutive years.
More recently, it has stood out for its leadership in the digital transformation agenda by being the first company in the electricity sector to develop process robotisation. EDP is a signatory and founder of the Brazilian Business Pact for Humanised Digitalisation of Work and recently announced the launch of the Digital Brazil Movement, through a partnership between the Brazilian Business Pact for Humanised Digitalisation of Work, promoted in partnership with EY, Korn Ferry and FIAP, and the Digital Nation Manifesto, led by IT Mídia and Fundação Dom Cabral.
