EDP Ventures, the venture capital arm of EDP, received the Energy Summit Award in the Green Funds category last week in Rio de Janeiro (RJ). The award recognizes investment initiatives focused on sustainability. The ceremony took place during the Energy Summit, Brazil’s largest event dedicated to innovation, energy, and sustainability, organized in partnership with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and held from June 24 to 26.

The award aims to honor organizations that stand out in promoting the energy transition and are helping to shape the future of energy in Brazil. This edition featured thematic and sectoral categories to broaden the scope of recognition and highlight the diversity of initiatives — from large corporations to emerging startups, academic projects, investment funds, mobility cases, and female leadership. Finalists were nominated and evaluated by a technical committee coordinated by MIT Technology Review Brazil, based on criteria such as impact, innovation, applicability, and contribution to the sector’s sustainable development.

The recognition of EDP Ventures highlights its mission to accelerate the energy transition by investing in tech startups with the potential to create value and address EDP’s business challenges, promoting open innovation in the energy sector. With a well-established investment portfolio — currently comprising 39 startups — across North America, Asia-Pacific, Europe and South America, EDP Ventures focuses on supporting and developing initiatives in industrial decarbonization, renewable asset automation, energy storage, and grid efficiency.

In Brazil, standout investments include a partnership with Delfos, a startup from Ceará that developed technology to optimize wind and solar assets, reducing operational costs and expanding its operations to Europe. Another example is Fractal, based in Florianópolis, which created a platform for dam and water resource management and safety using artificial intelligence.

Innovation as a Strategic Pillar

Innovation is one of EDP’s strategic pillars for leading the energy transition and tackling decarbonization challenges. The goal is to accelerate new businesses by rapidly adopting innovative solutions and exploring new pathways. This strategy involves investing in high-growth-potential technologies as well as developing mature technologies, focusing on four fronts: Internal Challenges, Open Ecosystem, Ventures, and R&D.
