Johnson Electric and EDP start operation of a solar distributed generation plant in North-West Italy
EDP, European leader in distributed solar generation, through EDP Energia Italia, has recently put its latest solar plant in operation in the facilities of Johnson Electric, a global leader in electric motors, actuators, motion subsystems, and related electromechanical components, in Asti (Piedmont), Italy.
Installing a photovoltaic system at the production facility is an important step since on-site generation helps ease reliance on the grid, minimize transmission losses, and protect against price fluctuations, delivering significant cost savings.
With an installed capacity exceeding 0.3 MWp, EDP’s solar plant will generate nearly 0.4 GWh of clean electricity each year. The plant’s annual output also prevents more than 110 tons of CO2 emissions, helping Johnson Electric advance its sustainability goals and support Italy’s decarbonization efforts.
EDP’s proven ability to install and maintain high-quality clean generation assets globally underlines its capacity to be a reliable partner for large companies with significant production and on-site generation needs.
This partnership shows how EDP supports industrial players like Johnson Electric in lowering emissions, strengthening resilience, and taking greater control of their energy future.
“At Johnson Electric, we believe that sustainability is not just a responsibility — it’s a legacy. Partnering with EDP to power our production with clean energy is a decisive step toward building a greener future for the generations to come. This collaboration reflects our deep commitment to electrification, innovation, and environmental stewardship. Together, we are proving that industrial progress and climate action can go hand in hand — creating a world where clean energy drives opportunity, resilience, and hope for tomorrow” is the reply from Fabio Conti, Senior Operation Manager Johnson Electric Asti, Italy.
EDP started operating in Italy in 2010, first through EDP Renewables, which focuses on large-scale wind and solar development. In 2019, it expanded its presence with EDP Energia Italia, which constructs and manages distributed solar generation assets.
EDP Energia Italia has contracted over 150 MWp of distributed solar capacity for Italian corporate clients, spanning nearly 1,400 installations. The company also manages on-site solar systems paired with storage solutions, optimizing energy management and reducing reliance on the grid. Globally, EDP’s Client Solutions business oversees more than 15,000 solar installations for corporate clients, with a contracted capacity of over 3 GWp.
