EDP installs 2.800 solar panels to support Massucco’s decarbonization efforts

EDP, through EDP Energia Italia, a European leader in distributed solar generation, has completed the installation and begun operation of a new on-site solar power plant at the production site of Massucco, a specialist in hot-forged, hot-rolled, and machined bearing rings based in Turin, Piedmont.

The project includes the installation of close to 2,800 solar panels, delivering more than 1.5 MWp of installed capacity and generating close to 2 GWh of clean electricity annually. This output will help avoid the emission of approximately 864 tons of CO₂ each year, equivalent to the carbon captured by nearly 6,000 trees. With this renewable energy, Massucco will be able to power its day-to-day operations more sustainably, supporting Italy’s broader targets for decarbonization.

“EDP is proud to support Massucco in integrating on-site photovoltaic generation to directly power its industrial processes. In Italy, where conventional sources still dominate industrial energy use, solutions like this are essential to optimizing its day-to-day operations while improving energy autonomy. This partnership shows how industrial companies can stabilize energy costs and strengthen long-term competitiveness while contributing to the country’s energy transition"
António Ricciardi
Head of the Client Solutions business in Europe at EDP

This project is under EDP’s “As-a-Service” financial model, from which the company makes the initial investment, installs the panels, and ensures that the maintenance and performance of the asset in Massucco’s facilities are properly managed. The “As-a-Service" model provides greater flexibility and long-term cost predictability in the future due to the fixed energy tariff.

The installation is part of a broader effort by EDP to promote distributed solar generation as a key driver for the energy transition. Industrial heat production currently accounts for roughly 18% of global CO₂ emissions. By adding locally produced solar energy at each client facility and by having innovative solutions that allow replacing fossil fuels with renewable energy for thermal processes, EDP is working on fast and effective ways to decarbonize heavy industry.

EDP has been present in the Italian market since 2010, initially through EDP Renewables, focusing on large-scale wind and solar development. In 2019, it expanded its presence with EDP Energia Italia, which centers on distributed solar generation.

Currently, EDP Energia Italia has contracted over 150 MWp of distributed solar capacity in Italian corporate consumers across nearly 1,400 installations. EDP also manages on-site solar installations paired with storage in Italy, creating an optimal environment for energy management and reducing dependency on the energy grid. Globally, EDP, through its Client Solutions business, has over 15,000 solar installations in corporate clients and a contracted capacity of 3GWp, of which over 1.5GWp is under the “As-a-Service” model.
