EDP's new hybrid park in Portugal enters into operation

Located in Aljezur, EDP’s third wind-solar project in Portugal — and the tenth hybrid in the Iberian Peninsula — reinforces the group’s commitment to the region and to multi-technology projects

EDP takes another important step in its strategy in Portugal with the start of operations at the Charneca das Lebres hybrid solar power plant, located in Aljezur (Algarve). With this new project, situated next to the Bordeira wind farm, the company strengthens its commitment to the development of renewables and, in particular, to projects that combine different technologies

With an installed capacity of 15.3 MW and an estimated annual output of 24.6 GWh, equivalent to the annual energy consumption of around 24,000 residents, the solar power plant leverages the existing infrastructure of the wind farm, avoiding the need for new substations. This approach increases local renewable energy production by 41%, reaching a total of 83.1 GWh/year when combined with the 58.5 GWh/year generated by the Bordeira wind farm, maximizing grid efficiency and minimizing environmental impact.

Construction of the power plant began in October 2024 and covers an area of 11.2 hectares, with around 26,000 solar modules installed. The plant is connected to the grid using the same 20 kV line as the wind farm, allowing for optimized use of existing resources and avoiding the need for new infrastructure investments. Once operational, the project will help avoid the emission of approximately 64,000 tonnes of CO₂ per year.

Charneca das Lebres is EDP’s third wind-solar hybrid project in Portugal, bringing the company’s total installed capacity from hybrid parks combining these two technologies in the country to 101.2 MW. Across the Iberian Peninsula, with this new park now operational, EDP reaches ten multi-technology hybrid projects — including wind, solar, hydro and battery systems — with a total installed capacity of over 925 MW: 696.43 MW in Portugal and 229.55 MW in Spain. In Portugal, five hybrid projects stand out: Alto Rabagão, Alqueva, Sabugal, Monte de Vez, and now Charneca das Lebres/Bordeira, all combining different renewable sources and technologies such as bifacial panels, wind turbines, hydropower and batteries, ensuring greater efficiency and reduced emissions. In Spain, EDP operates five other hybrid wind-solar projects: Cruz de Hierro, Villacastín, Castillo de Garcimuñoz, Rabosera and Las Lomillas
