Director of the Institute for a Just Transition visits the Aboño thermal power plant, recently converted to gas
Judit Carreras García, Director of the Institute for a Just Transition (ITJ), is visiting Asturias to monitor the projects supported by the Institute in the region and to meet with key social and institutional stakeholders. During her stay, Carreras visited the Aboño thermal power plant, where she learned firsthand about the results of the ambitious project to convert Unit 2 of the facility to natural gas.
The recently completed project eliminated coal use, introduced new natural gas and hydrogen burners, and significantly reduced emissions—helping improve air quality and promote the circular economy.
The initiative has created over 600 jobs and involved more than 80 companies, establishing itself as a model of a fair and sustainable energy transition in Asturias.
During the visit, the Director was also joined by the team responsible for EDP’s renewable hydrogen project at the plant, who shared updates on its advanced development.
