EDP Installs Solar Panels at Singapore’s Iconic Gardens by the Bay

Gardens by the Bay (GB), a premier iconic and internationally renowned horticultural destination, was envisioned as a model of sustainable development in Singapore. In strengthening its efforts towards sustainability, it has completed the installation of solar photovoltaic (PV) systems with EDP, through EDP Renewables APAC, under a Power Purchase Agreement.

The upgraded overall system, which features more than 1,700 solar panels with a total capacity of 1.08MWp, marked a significant milestone in GB’s ongoing commitment to environmental responsibility. The newly expanded system not only generates clean, renewable energy to power part of GB’s operations but also represents a significant step forward to a more sustainable and greener future.

The expansion and enhancement of solar infrastructure was carried out across GB including the Supertree Grove, and new sites such as the Canopy and the Bayfront Pavilion. The successful implementation of the project exemplifies EDP's capabilities to deliver innovative tailored renewable solutions that overcome spatial limitations and drive sustainability in dense cities.

The company worked closely with GB, taking into consideration GB’s inputs and leveraged specialized expertise in innovative installation design to maximize energy generation across unique spaces while balancing safety, plant life, aesthetic integrity and operational logistics. These unique spaces include the Supertrees, which have irregular surfaces and shapes that make mounting solar panels more complex than on standard rooftops or flat land.

"This project at Gardens by the Bay is a clear example of how to harness the sun wherever it shines — from rooftops and open ground to the iconic Supertrees that shape Singapore’s skyline. By combining innovation, tailored design, and close collaboration with our clients, we can transform even the most unconventional spaces into sources of clean energy. In a land-constrained city, every surface has the potential to contribute to decarbonization, and this initiative reflects our commitment to delivering smart, scalable solutions that help our partners achieve their long-term sustainability goals”, highlights Vera Pinto Pereira, EDP’s board member".

This commissioning of the enhanced system exemplifies the shared vision of both organizations to create a more sustainable and greener tomorrow. Through this contract, EDP is pleased to have supported Gardens by the Bay in advancing its renewable energy adoption as part of its sustainability drive to future-proof the Gardens.

A national garden and premier horticultural attraction for local and international visitors, Singapore’s Gardens by the Bay is a showpiece of horticulture and garden artistry that presents the plant kingdom in a whole new way. Home to more than 1.5 million plants, its collection is renowned for plants seldom seen in this part of the world, ranging from species in cool, temperate climates to tropical forests and habitats. The Gardens was built on a foundation of sustainability principles, and its cooled conservatories Flower Dome and Cloud Forest, as well as its iconic Supertrees, practice environmental sustainability. Since opening in 2012, more than 100 million people have visited Gardens by the Bay.
