Águas de Gaia

Social inclusion
Social inclusion
In Brazil, promoting freedom of expression and emotional intelligence for hundreds of women.

The Águas de Gaia project, with EDP's support, provided hundreds of women from underprivileged social backgrounds with the opportunity to enjoy surfing lessons and moments of connection with themselves and nature.

Transforming vulnerability into strength

EDP Brasil joined the Águas de Gaia social project, with the objective of offering surfing classes to, at least, 675 women from socially vulnerable contexts.

Project's Mission

Águas de Gaia project intends to promote autonomy, freedom of expression, emotional intelligence, body awareness and reinforcement of values such as perseverance, cooperation, responsibility, social involvement, respect for others and respect for nature.

Pillars of the project

  • Social inclusion: priority is given to women coming from peripheral neighborhoods that, with the action, may benefit from a reinforcement of their self-esteem.
  • Environmental awareness: the process implies a strong connection with nature, and particularly with the ocean.
  • Health: besides physical activities, the process promotes self-knowledge and compassion, contributing to the improvement of the physical and mental health of the participants.

Functioning of the actions

The actions, with a duration of three months each, are free of charge and guarantee the participants' transportation, food, and accompaniment for their children while they participate in the actions. With this, it is intended that the women can enjoy moments of connection with themselves and with nature, besides realizing their dream of learning to surf.
