EDP Foundation pledges €1 million in computers for schools

Thursday 11, February 2021

These funds, donated by the 2021 EDP Solidária Program, will be directed to help schools and students (aged 6 to 14) in vulnerable situations.

EDP Foundation will support the digitalization of the Portuguese education system by donating €1 million in computers to public schools. The schools and students which will receive these computers have been identified in cooperation with the Ministry of Education and are included in the TEIP (Priority Intervention Educational Territories) Program, which means that they are located in economically and socially disadvantaged areas.

These funds will make it possible to purchase about 3000 computers, which will help students in economically and socially vulnerable situations (from basic to secondary schools) in their learning process.

The first computers will be delivered in the next few days at School No. 1 in Beja to support remote learning, which has been implemented due to the worsening of the Covid-19 pandemic, and will be available for the use of students throughout their academic careers. The remaining computers will be delivered to the other schools according to the availability of our suppliers.

"Social investment in priority areas for Portuguese society is part of EDP Foundation's DNA. Faced with the return of remote learning, we want to contribute to the digital inclusion of vulnerable students, thus helping create more favorable conditions for their academic success," said EDP Foundation President Vera Pinto Pereira.

These computers will be donated under the EDP Solidária Program, one of Portugal's largest private social investment programs. The EDP Solidária Program was created in 2004 to sponsor projects which improve the quality of life of socially disadvantaged people and promote the integration of communities at risk of social exclusion. Since then, it has sponsored the implementation or continuity of more than 400 Social Inclusion and Health projects, investing more than €15 million.

In 2020 the EDP Solidária Program contributed €500,000 to the purchase of personal protective equipment - disposable masks, gloves, glasses, and gowns - which benefited approximately 26,000 users and employees from 300 elderly homes in 16 regions across the country.
