5 Tips to Drive Access to Energy

If planet Earth belongs to everyone, the problems that affect a part of the planet will affect us all in the long run. That is why Climate Change has attracted so much international attention, with virtually all countries in the world agreeing to the 2015 Paris Agreement. And this strategy also involves the so-called UN Sustainable Development Goals, which set out specific targets for 2030.

Access to Energy, the 7th of these 17 UN goals, bridges the gap between real needs - the 789 million people who are still living without access to electricity - and those lofty objectives we should all strive towards: to protect the environment and make the planet a more sustainable place.

Choose renewable energiesDo you know the law of supply and demand? As much as you may feel that your choices do not really make a difference, it all depends on you. When you bet on renewable energies - whether at home, in your car or in your everyday choices, such as when you opt for a hotel or a restaurant which you know is more sustainability-minded -, you are taking a stand for the planet, and, together with the stand of other people, this ends up having a multiplier effect on society and the economy.
Bet on energy efficiencyAccess to energy is something people do not even think about in Europe, but this general picture hides specific problems that may affect even the most developed countries. One of them is energy poverty, and Portugal fares particularly poorly in this respect. Put very simply, energy poverty means the inability to maintain thermal comfort - keeping your house warm in winter and cool in summer - due to financial constraints, but also to poor quality build. Improving energy efficiency with simple gestures and small investments helps tackle energy poverty and improves Access to Energy.
Electrify your lifeInvest in electrification, especially through renewable energies. There are approximately 800 million people around the world without access to electricity, but even more people - 2.8 billion - who do not have clean energy to cook. They use firewood, coal, kerosene and other materials that are not energy-efficient, are highly polluting, and can even be harmful to their health - domestic pollution kills millions of people every year. Electricity is cleaner, safer and should be used in our kitchens whenever possible.
Adopt a sustainable lifestyleSeveral UN Sustainable Development Goals intersect or affect one another. Energy and climate are good examples of this. By adopting a more sustainable lifestyle and using energy cautiously and conscientiously, we are strengthening our resilience. The choices we make in terms of food, clothing, mobility and water consumption have an impact on our ability to reduce pollution and greenhouse gas emissions, both in our cities and in production sites. And ultimately, global sustainability reduces inequalities between regions and countries.
Support international projectsAs for your role as a 'citizen of the world', try to get involved in international projects that drive Access to Energy - especially in Africa, where there are more people without electricity than the entire European population. The UN, AIESEC and AMI are only some of the institutions that have international volunteer projects. But there is a lot you can do without leaving your country or even your home. Do some research, support fundraising or awareness-raising campaigns, champion the cause in your community or workplace, get involved in sustainability projects. In short, become an agent of change. Access to Energy is a right, a driver of progress and a harbinger of the future, and the latter will be all the better and more sustainable for the planet the more people are committed to this cause.
