EDP participates in COP26

The COP (Conference of the Parties) has been in existence since 1995 and, after being delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, is now holding its 26th meeting in Glasgow, from October 31st to November 12th, 2021. To discuss measures and policies in fighting climate change, government representatives from around 200 countries and companies with a leading role in the environmental sector, such as EDP, will be present.

Paris Agreement

Six years have passed since the Paris Agreement, an idea presented in COP21, where the urgency in the face of global warming and the need to maintain an average temperature below 1.5 ºC became evident. 

According to the latest IPCC report - Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change - human beings are the main responsible for climate change, it is up to us all to play a role in the fight. That is also the importance of a conference of this dimension: reaching an agreement with the world's leaders, ensuring that the goals are met, so that the efforts are greater and able to match the little time left there is, in order to make a difference on the planet.

Net zero by mid-century
Countries are being asked to come forward with ambitious 2030 emissions reductions targets that align with reaching net zero by the middle of the century.
1- accelerate the phase-out of coal
3- speed up the switch to electric vehicles
To deliver on these stretching targets, countries will need to:
2- curtail deforestation
4- encourage investment in renewables.
Adapt to protect communities and habitats
The climate is already changing and it will continue to change even as we reduce emissions, with devastating effects.
1- protect and restore ecosystems
2- build defences, warning systems and resilient infrastructure and agriculture to avoid loss of homes, livelihoods and even lives
At COP26 we need to work together to enable and encourage countries affected by climate change to:
Finance renewables
To deliver on our first two goals, developed countries must make good on their promise to mobilise at least $100bn in climate finance per year by 2020.
International financial institutions must play their part and we need work towards unleashing the trillions in private and public sector finance required to secure global net zero.
Work together to deliver
We can only rise to the challenges of the climate crisis by working together. At COP26 we must:
1- finalise the Paris Rulebook (the detailed rules that make the Paris Agreement operational)
2- accelerate action to tackle the climate crisis through collaboration between governments, businesses and civil society.

The priorities of COP26 are also those of EDP

The priorities of the Presidency of COP26 (mitigation, adaptation, collaboration and finance) have been part of EDP's strategy to fight climate change, placing us at the heart of the energy transition. We are focused on the ESG - Environmental, Social and Governance themes, which include green and clean energies, the decarbonization of the sector, the electrification of consumption, the protection of communities and habitats, the promotion of fairer energy.

SSE will premiere Hydro: Powering a Net Zero Future, a film celebrating the rich heritage of hydro power and looking ahead to its vital role in combating climate change.
Following the film’s premiere there will be a panel event with UK and international experts discussing hydro’s role in reducing carbon emissions.

In this session, specific challenges in the energy transition will be addressed, particularly in a sector heavily impacted by the pandemic: retail.
It will be possible to hear the founders of the “Race to Zero Breakthroughs” campaign, which promotes the reduction of emissions by half, by 2030, with companies. Miguel Setas, administrator of EDP, will be one of the speakers.
