Dow Jones 2019

We share our victories with those who share our values!

The Dow Jones Sustainability Index was the first financial performance benchmark for the most sustainable companies worldwide.

Companies are rated as the most capable of creating long-term value for shareholders by managing the risks associated with economic, environmental, social, and corporate governance factors.

We are a leader in integrated utilities and we are in the top 2 of utilities!

For us, sustainability is the basis for all our activity and, for the 12th consecutive year, we are part of the Dow Jones Index. This is a clear recognition of EDP's commitment to sustainable development and its ability to execute in different areas of sustainability.

Among the criteria evaluated, we had 9 with the maximum score (100 points): water risk management, climate change, environmental reporting, social reporting, human rights, community development, stakeholder engagement, political involvement responsible and materiality analysis.

But the path is not alone, and it is partnerships that help us reach beyond. Therefore, we decided to highlight the companies and institutions that accompany us in this mission.

Some of the partners that help us reach the top!

We want to be close to academia and scientific knowledge.

To this end, we have created the €2.5M EDP Biodiversity Fund for research projects that aim to mitigate the impact of renewable energy production on nature and biodiversity.

EDP Biodiversity Chair

Co-financed by EDP and FCT, the EDP Biodiversity Chair was created in 2012. This Chair aims to promote scientific research on the management of environmental impacts and biodiversity conservation, allowing for additional funding through new projects and new doctoral/postdoctoral grants.

The EDP Biodiversity Chair was established in Porto University's Biodiversity Research Center (CIBIO), which is the EDP partner that has made the most solid and systematic contribution to our position on biodiversity.

How does CIBIO help EDP be listed on the Dow Jones Index?

This partnership has been helping EDP solve a variety of problems related to the company's growing focus on renewable energies, by finding solutions to mitigate the environmental impact at EDP production centers.

Biodiversity Project

Bringing Ospreys Back to Portugal

One of the projects that emerged as part of the EDP Biodiversity Chair was the Osprey Reintroduction project. The project focused on the Alqueva region (Portugal), where EDP operates a water energy center. Thanks to CIBIO's work and EDP's financial support, the osprey has returned to the country.

Economy and Innovation

We want energy efficiency and economic/ecological sustainability, thus helping create sustainable urban centers.

Arquiled is owned by Climar and two investment funds: EDP Ventures and Capital Criativo. As a company that develops and manufactures LED lighting solutions - thus helping create safer and more sustainable cities - EDP has invested (through EDP Ventures) in this Portuguese tech company, which has been a LED technology pioneer since 2005.

Arquiled started its journey in architectural lighting but then moved into the street lighting sector, where they create energy efficiency and economical/ecological sustainability solutions. Boasting unmatched quality and reliability, their products and solutions are developed at the Arquiled factory in Mora (Alentejo, Portugal).

Social Responsibility

EDP has made a significant investment in universal access to sustainable energy. In a world where about 1 billion people still lack access to electricity, the EDP Group has been actively involved in debating and devising concrete solutions to address one of the biggest challenges facing humanity today: decarbonisation.

EDP Ventures has invested $500,000 (about €430,000) in SOLshare, a Bangladesh-based company that has created a new solution which facilitates the creation and management of electrical microgrids so as to bring solar energy to homes without electricity - in an affordable and sustainable manner.

The solution involves the deployment of solar panels in people's homes and is based on the transaction of energy credits between various dwellings. This makes it possible to create microgrids in which electricity transactions are made between homes and small businesses.
