Let's bring Hope Backpacks to Mozambican schools

Schools in Mozambique open their doors for another school year in February. We want this year to mark a return to normalcy for students in Dondo region, which was destroyed about a year ago after the passing of Cyclone Idai.

We want to deliver 3,900 backpacks with kits designed to meet the basic needs of these children - school, hygiene, and food supplies.

EDP joins this APOIAR campaign along with Águas de Portugal, Lusíadas, Giving Tuesday, and Junior Achievement.

Give your contribution

We already have the backpacks. We just need your help to complete the kit to be delivered to each student, which will include:

  • Two A4 or A5 notebooks (1 lined + 1 grid)

  • One pencil case (with eraser, sharpener, pencil and pen)

  • Set of 6 or 12 colored pencils

  • One mug (plastic or aluminum)

  • One tablespoon

  • One toothbrush + one toothpaste

  • One body soap

Please do not to include products not mentioned on this list. And please deliver your full kit (with all the necessary products) without the backpack.

You can deliver your kit from December 3 to December 13, from 08:00 AM to 08:00 PM, at the following locations.

After the collection process, the goods will be placed in our backpacks by volunteers. The backpacks will then be shipped to Mozambique in January 2020 so they can arrive in time for the start of the school year in February.

Joining efforts

This initiative is only possible with your help and the collaboration of our partners.

Junior Achievement will add 140 'welcome cloths' to our Hope Backpacks. These cloths will be painted by students from Portuguese schools to welcome Mozambican children on their first day of school.

On December 3 we will also join a Giving Tuesday initiative that challenges the community to take part in a donation campaign against the Black Friday consumerism fest happening a few days earlier, on November 29. On this day, spread the message by word of mouth or on social media (use the hashtags #daparamudar,  #givingtuesdaypt and #daretovolunteer).

Supporting Mozambique

This will be the second time EDP delivers Hope Backpacks to Mozambique after the passing of cyclone Idai. In July 2019 we joined the Supporting Mozambique initiative, which brought 5,000 backpacks with survival kits to families affected by the cyclone.
