Key data

Duration: 48 months (start date: 1st October 2022)

Overall budget: 3 K€

Demonstrators:Vienna (Austria), Rovereto (Italy), Gernika TEK (Spain), Vaasa (Finland), Matosinhos (Portugal), Kozani (Greece)

Goals

The project ProLight investigates in six neighbourhoods in Austria, Finland, Italy, Greece, Spain and Portugal on how to bring together both innovative retrofitting technologies, new sustainable business models and the participation of local citizens. The individual districts have different approaches and will work with community managers, develop digital apps or adapt other participatory activities to improve the energy literacy of its inhabitants. The different sites will share their experiences and inspire each other, so that eventually also other districts and cities will be able to learn and benefit from the outcomes of this research.

Ultimately, the goal of ProLight is to investigate how to accelerate the implementation of these refurbishment measures while ensuring that all relevant socio-economic, environmental and cultural aspects are considered along the way. With this innovative approach, the project hopes to increase the percentage of renewable energy consumed in the housing sector as well as to reduce energy consumption per capita.

Highlights

  • EDP NEW is providing overall project support and leading the framing of the site ecosystems and demonstrators’ implementation monitoring.
  • Consortium formed by 16 partners from 10 European Countries.

Demonstrators

Vienna, Austria

The Austrian demo site will work in close collaboration with the Viennese municipal department, bringing together users and other local stakeholders in order to provide an innovative heating and cooling solution for affordable housing. At this site, a geothermal heating system will be implemented and combined with renewable solar thermal generation. This will allow for the heat that is supplied to the ground during summer to be stored for the winter months. The site will be managed by FHTW, who will analyze the energy consumption of the community.

Rovereto, Italy

The Italian demo site is a recently opened energy community aimed at vulnerable people and with a focus on empowering residents with dedicated digital services towards sustainable energy. Furthermore, the site is looking to build and improve a smart district app for citizens.

Gernika-Lumo, Spain

Situated in the UNESCO heritage town of Gernika, this demo site aims to build an energy community by engaging with the local population, residents, students, businesses, and other stakeholders.

City of Vaasa, Finland

In Vaasa, ProLight intends to demolish and reconstruct a new student village. Aside from providing students with energy-efficient housing, this demo site aims to guide the community towards more resource-efficient habits. This is why the Vaasa Energy Business Innovation Centre and the Student Housing Foundation in Vaasa (VOAS) will collaborate to create the LivingApp.

Matosinhos, Portugal

In this Portuguese neighbourhood, the ProLight project will work to build a renewable energy community that is up to the positive Energy District (PED) standard. The project will implement envelope and hot water interventions that will be funded under the Recovery and Resilience Fund in addition to photovoltaic energy production to be used by the inhabitants. The demo site will be coordinated by AdEPorto on behalf of the municipality of Matosinhos.

Kozani, Greece

The Kozani demo site aims to design and implement energy efficiency solutions and smart net metering for residential buildings that have been donated to the vulnerable population by the Greek state. One of the main goals is to build a new solar park with the hope to supply energy to social housing. Currently, the municipality is exploring how to raise private investments and funding in order to achieve climate neutrality by 2030.

Our role

EDP NEW will provide overall contributions to the project, closely supporting activities in the Matosinhos Lightouse, together with the Porto Energy Agency (AdEPorto).

EDP NEW will also lead more specific tasks related to the characterization of the sites’ ecosystems (from inhabitant to technology and decision processes) and will monitor and report on project implementation in each demosite.
